Jessie is a 7 year old Labrador who was presented as an emergency after hours after her owners noticed she was wobbly on her hindlegs. They had found and removed a paralysis tick the day before and Jessie had appeared unaffected until now.
On examination Jessie was able to stand but was displaying signs of hindlimb ataxia (poor co-ordination) and her gag reflex (ability to swallow) was absent. She was breathing without difficulty and at this stage there was no congestion in the lungs. She was admitted to the hospital for immediate treatment. An intravenous catheter was placed into her front leg and the tick anti-serum was administered by slow intravenous injection.
All food and water was with- held to minimise the risk of Jessie aspirating into her lungs and developing pneumonia. Further tick searches were performed but no more ticks were found. The following day, Jessie was able to stand but was still ataxic. Her gag reflex had not improved and her blad- der was full but she was unable to urinate so a urinary catheter was required. Jessie’s recovery was slow and she was given small amounts of water to drink on day 3, no vomiting occurred so small meals were also introduced. Her walking also improved and she was discharged into her owners care with instructions for strict rest.
Jessie’s case of Tick Paralysis was fairly mild, some patients need Oxygen supplementation and intensive care nursing for much longer periods of time. Please con- tact us urgently if you think your pet may be affected by a tick, even if it is outside of normal hours.
