Grooming Services
Regularly grooming your dog plays an important role in keeping them healthy and happy.
At Booval Vet Hospital, Karalee Village Vet Clinic and Pine Mountain Vet Clinic we offer cat & dog sedated clipping services by qualified nurses, these are not styled grooms and allow our nurses to check your pet for any skin, dental and parasite issues while performing a maintenance clip*
Estimates for sedation clipping services will be provided when making an appointment and are based on the weight, size and current condition of your pets coat (severity of matting etc).
*Grooming services do not include a health check or Veterinarian consultation, any advice provided by a nurse is of a general nature only.
Some pets require sedation to have their fur clipped or cut because grooming can be stressful, uncomfortable, or even painful for them. Here are the main reasons why sedation might be necessary:
1. Severe Matting or Painful Tangles
When a pet’s fur is very matted, clippers and combs can pull on the skin, which is painful.
Mats can also trap moisture and cause sores underneath, making the area extra sensitive.
Sedation helps the vet & nurse remove the mats safely without causing distress or injury.
2. Anxiety or Fear
Some pets are extremely fearful of clippers, the noise, or the handling involved.
High-stress animals may panic, thrash, or bite, putting themselves and the handlers at risk.
Sedation allows the process to be calm and safe.
3. Aggressive or Uncooperative Behaviour
Pets that snap, scratch, or resist strongly can’t be safely clipped without sedation.
Sedation protects both the pet and the veterinary or grooming staff.
4. Medical or Physical Conditions
Pets with arthritis, skin infections, or other painful conditions may not tolerate being positioned or handled.
Sedation reduces stress and discomfort, making it possible to groom them humanely.
5. Lengthy or Intricate Grooming Sessions
For pets who need a lot of work done (e.g., full-body clipping after months of matting), sedation ensures they can remain still long enough without becoming too stressed or exhausted.
👉 Sedation is usually only recommended when necessary.
